Say Thank You for More Student Aid!
Please take a minute to call your US member of Congress and urge him or her to support higher education reform legislation.
On
Friday, September 7th, 2007 the U.S. Senate and House of
Representatives passed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act by
votes of 79 to 12 and 292-97 respectively. The bill now goes to the
President who has said he will sign the legislation into law. The
legislation addresses the dual financial challenges of access and
affordability that face American college students. The legislation
provides billions of dollars a year in additional grant aid to
low-income students through the Pell Grant program. It will also help
students address the burden of rising student debt through lower
interest rates and a new repayment system.
Despite the huge
political clout of the student lending industry, both the House and the
Senate voted to lower the subsidy that the lenders receive from the aid
programs to divert that money to pay for the reforms above. To ensure
that our House members continue to champion higher education issues,
they need to hear positive feedback!
